Key facts
- Wheelchair-accessible units have a ground-level floor, a wide door and room inside to turn.
- A documented ADA-compliant unit comes with paperwork for inspected public events — and costs more.
- 2010 ADA Standards §213.2: at least 5% of portable units per cluster, minimum one, where accessible units are required.
- Most private parties only need wheelchair access, not the compliance paperwork.
What is the difference between wheelchair-accessible and ADA-compliant?
A wheelchair-accessible unit lets a wheelchair roll in and turn. An ADA-compliant unit is documented to meet the 2010 ADA Standards, including a 60-inch turning circle and grab bars, and comes with paperwork for an inspector. Eric Rental Works rents both; the documented unit costs about $80–$130 more.
“Does it have to be ADA? It has to be wheelchair accessible. That's all I know.”
From the dispatch log
When that caller learned no inspector would check the unit, the quote dropped from $401 for the documented ADA unit to $319 for wheelchair-accessible, delivery included. Asking which one you need can save about $80.

How many accessible units does my event need?
Where accessible restrooms are required, section 213.2 of the 2010 ADA Standards calls for at least 5% of portable units in each cluster, and no fewer than one, to be accessible. A 12-unit festival therefore needs at least 1. Dispatch asks every event caller this question, because many plan none.
From the dispatch log
A festival organizer expecting up to 2,000 people ordered 12 units and 3 handwash stations with no accessible unit. Our dispatcher asked; the order became 11 standard and 1 accessible.

Questions callers asked us
Does it have to be ADA, or just wheelchair accessible?
For most private parties, wheelchair accessible is enough: a wide, ground-level unit a wheelchair can roll into. A documented ADA-compliant unit is for public events and sites where an inspector or venue will check paperwork. The compliant unit costs more, so ask dispatch which one your event needs.
How much is a handicap porta potty?
A wheelchair-accessible unit runs about $270–$320 per event in McAllen with delivery and pickup. A fully documented ADA-compliant unit, used when an inspector or venue asks for paperwork, runs about $400. Ask which one you need — most private parties only need wheelchair access.
Does a public event need a handicap unit?
Where portable restrooms serve the public, the 2010 ADA Standards section 213.2 calls for at least 5% of units in each cluster, and no fewer than one, to be accessible. In our call log, a 2,000-person festival had not planned any until dispatch asked. Plan at least one.
I have low-hanging cable wires over my driveway. Is that a problem?
Tell dispatch when you book. Drivers note low cable and internet wires, then call before arrival so you can guide them in. If the truck can't clear them, the crew sets the unit by hand truck from the street side.
I don't know where it goes yet. Can I tell you later?
Yes. Book now and text the placement spot to your dispatcher before delivery day — a photo with an arrow works best. If you will be home, the driver calls 30 minutes ahead and you can show them the spot in person.
Can I cancel if something happens?
Yes. Cancel up to 24 hours before scheduled delivery for a full refund — bad weather, a change of plans, anything. Cancellations within 24 hours of delivery are not refundable, because the truck and unit are already committed.
